Brian Appel: Art Consulting, Art Criticism

brian-appel-warholBrian Appel is an art consultant and art writer in New York City.  Brian is also a friend.  Brian is extremely passionate about art in all its forms and his passion is infectious to those he engages with.  He is personally responsible for educating me in the history of contemporary fine art photography as well as guiding me into the world of art auctions.  Brian’s expertise lies in his depth of understanding of the fine art market from the auction houses to the many major galleries in New York.  He attends just about every major auction at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips de Pury and enthusiastically pours over the sales figures and pricing histories for all of the most important artists and collectible pieces.  I have never seen a person so intent on soaking up so much information.  Brian then writes extensive articles that detail auction proceedings, compiling much of the sales data and giving his analysis.

In addition to understanding the art world from the auction side, Brian is also a very good art criticism writer.  He has written reviews of many gallery shows and art exhibits giving thoughful insight to the artist’s work and creative process.  Many of his articles can be found published at artcritical.

We had the pleasure of  creating a crisp clean design for Brian’s art consulting website.  We continue to update it with his most recent articles.  You can see his most recent review of the Richard Prince show at Gagosian Gallery here as well as his extensive bibliography here.
