The Food Network is currently airing The Next Iron Chef competition. A competition to determine the next chef that will join the ‘pantheon’ of Iron Chefs that rule over the battles of Iron Chef America. Mario Batali, Masaharu Morimoto, Bobby Flay, Cat Cora and Michael Symon make for a strange mix. So The Next Iron Chef competition can be useful in watching how each chef’s strengths could possibly round-out the traits of the current Iron crew. And it’s an obviously good way for the Food Network to extend the Iron Chef brand.
I have been watching Iron Chef for a while and I like to make a game out of predicting which chef will win the competition and by how many points. I am sure many people do this. Picking a winner is usually pretty predictable. But guessing the point spread can be a little harder as the quality of the judging, unfortunately, can fluctuate from show to show.
I wanted to raise the bar for myself a little and make a prediction for who will ultimately be judged to be the newest Iron Chef. I have watched two or three episodes of the competition and I have been meaning to write this since the first one, but better late than never. I could go into my reasons for why each chef will not be selected and for why the chef I am predicting will be selected, but I wll skip that for now. Instead, I will get straight to the point. I predict that chef Jehangir Mehta will be the next Iron Chef. I have never eaten his food (crazy right?) but it looks like the guy has got the skills to pay the bills. And Iron Chef America could use his more exotic perspective to bolster its culinary cred. Because, let’s face it, one or two of those Iron Chefs are a little too… American.
We shall see if I am right… and if the producers (and judges) get it right.
