Tristan Eaton at Jonathan LeVine Gallery

billy-bananas-tristan-eatonI went last night to the launch party of Tristan Eaton’s most recent character creation, ‘Billy Bananas’, at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery.  I am a big fan of Tristan’s work and all the creative stuff that comes out of his Thunderdog Studios.  His most well known character, of course, is the amazing ‘Dunny’ he designed for Kidrobot, one of the coolest brands in the world (in my humble opinion).  Dunny caught the vinyl toy community’s imagination and took off.  I might even argue that Kidrobot’s popularity is due in large part to the success of Eaton’s Dunny.  Not to mention Munny, the Kidrobot mascot, Qees and Skumbo, all of which he has designed for Kidrobot

But really, the Dunny character is the genius stroke of Eaton’s work.   It is both familiar and alien.  Cool and cute.  And infinitely customizable.  Not only do famous artists render limited edition Dunnys in their signature style (these Dunnys are by Dalek), but the blank Dunnys allow everyone to put their artistic mark on it and make it their own.09-dunny-dalek

I absolutely love it.
